Free Ad Idea – Nailpolish Remover

Question: Come up with BTL strategies for Nail Polish Removers

Answers

1.

A lady is sitting in a busy mall with a bucket full of water and a collection of chemicals. She is trying to remove her nail polish and no matter what she does, the color wont go. She then calls other ladies in the mall to help her remove the nail polish.

This would be replicated in malls, at bus-stops, in book stores, ono busy crossings etc.

2.

A keyboard and mouse is kept with nail polish stains on the top. Text would say “need to remove nail color?”

3.

Neutral colored stickers in the shape of nails would be distributed to ladies. The stickers would be accompanied with a note saying “removing nail polish is as easy as putting these on.

Ideas, comments, criticism welcome !!!!

Billboards on Virtual Earth !!!

Its been a long time since I have been thinking about a career in advertising … I know I wont be any good but I want one shot at it. Was reading things related to advertisements when I came across yet another new concept in advertising … Billboards on Virtual Earth. They place virtual billboards on Google Earth and Virtual Earth.

We have seen ads everywhere ..

In the movies … starting with Forrest Gump to Cast Away to The Truman Show
In homes … Hangars, Carry Bags
In shops … well loads of them
On roads … billboards, traffic lights etc
On products … logos, punch lines
On internet … banner ads, pop ups, minisites
On email … like this one
On software … DAP, Web Accelerators etc
On blogs … πŸ™‚

Its everywhere. Add to the list Google Earth.

BrightGIS is offering spaces on Google Earth, ofcourse for a fee. Awesome concept .. !!!!

P.S.: Got this story from http://adverlab.blogspot.com/index.html. This is a very good resource for people interested in adverts.

Jhalak Dikhlaja – Bajaj Platnia

Jhalak Dikhlaja, a song from Himmesh Reshammaiya – I admit his music is good, but he can certainly stop singing – has been used in product launch for a new bike by Bajaj Auto.

Bajaj Platina launch has used Jhalak Dikhlaja for the campaign. Created by LOWE, this campaign can be viewed online here. MagIndia has a couple of print ads and the TVC.

Coming on to the much awaited review (my review :)), I think the product (Bajaj Platina) sucks. The “jhalak” part would fade away in a couple of months and the selling point of the bike – the shiny new looks would be gone. Further, there are lots of options for people when it comes to buying bikes. Coming on to the song, I think the song sucks big time (more than the BIKE). The lyrics are bad. The word aaja repeats throughout the song for eternity. Coming on to the Singer, the singer sings through the nose and all his songs sound the same. I am sure if you heard a piece of song, you wont be able to tell which song is that.

But … yes BUT when the two (and product and worse song) are combined together in that ad by a genuis (the copyrighter, creative director and other people for the Bajaj Platina project at LOWE), the ad becomes a piece of art. Amazing picturization and direction. I think I have some kind of liking for the Black n White species.

Pepsi TV – The most dissappointing ad ever

Pepsi TV – The most disappointing ad ever

Pepsi came up with the concept called Pepsi TV. Interesting concept I must say. People speculated that Pepsi are coming with an entertainment channel. Speculations were about β€œK”Ekta Kapoor tying up with Pepsi to start shows for Pepsi TV. Stars like SRK, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra were signed up to work on Pepsi TV promos. I was personally looking forward to Pepsi TV.

What did they come up with? “If you drink Pepsi with TV, it becomes Pepsi TV”. Wow.

They say, the power is in simplicity. They tried to get the maximum power and make it over-simple. What happened to those who thought Indian advertising is growing leaps and bounds with new, better ideas springing up from everywhere? What about some creativity?

I don’t know who (didn’t) had the brains behind Pepsi TV, but I am sure they were either trying to create the worst concept of the year or did not get their paycheck from Pepsi. After concepts as good as Bholu PocketMaar for SBI, Pepsi is a real dampener.

10 years of … a Dream !

It’s monday morning and I opened up a newspaper to find the following ads on the very top and very bottom of the very front page…

10 years of “good you called”10 years of “I’m 2 mins away”

And as I flipped the pages, I found the following

10 years of “nice tune, yaar”10 years of “got a charger?”10 years of “hd a gr8 time, thnk”10 years of “missing u :-(“

On the entire back page, they had

10 years of touching lives across India.

And they are Airtel!

I as always tried to guess what the product could be … My best shot was Delhi Times, the supplement with The Times of India (I think this “paper” is as bad as they come; this is another story, would try to cover later).

So the point is that Airtel has completed 10 successful years in the telphony market. They have moved from a cellular service provider to complete telecommunication service providers with specialized services ranging from Landline services to Email on the go.

When they started operations, they were a small comany charging about 16 bucks per minute for an outgoing call and 8 for an incoming call. In 10 years, the call rates have dropped to about 2 bucks on an average for outgoing and free for incoming ! Talk of changing the face of the market…

Airtel obsoleted the fixed line phones and made a telephone a personal item for the first time in India. For the first time with a phone, you could talk to people directly without going through long channels.

Next in line is outsourcing of the network. Management gurus said that your core competency should never be outsourced or given to third parties but no sir, Airtel would do it. In the long run, one may never know what might happen but in the short run, the strategy sounds great with all the benefits flowing into theor books. Infact other operators are also following suit.

O by the way … Today happens to be Children Day, celebrated on the occasion of Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru’s BDay. He was our first Prime Minister. Yet again, I would like to reserve my comments for the gentleman.

Also two week long India International Trade Fair (IITF) starts today. 2005 marks the 25th aniversary of the IITF. I have many many fond memories of IIFT including a job hunt when I was in 11th std.

Javed Akhtar – Kyonki Fighter Hamesha Jeet-ta Hai …

Zidagi Hai To Khwab Hain,
Khwab Hai To Manzilain Hain,

Manzilain Hai To Faasle Hain,
Faasle Hai To Raaste Hain,
Raaste Hai To Mushkilain Hain,
Mushkilain Hain To Hausla Hain,

Hausla Hai To Vishwas Hai,

Kyonki Fighter Hamesha Jeet-ta Hai.

These words were penned by Javed Akhtar for an advertisement for a brand called Rotomac Fighter.

This ad was on television long long time ago and a few days ago, I just felt like listening to the jingle. It took me time to get the advert from MagIndia and when I got it, I was SO happy.

As I was writing this post, I was thinking about this writing instruments company in India that was bubbling on to the scene and had at one point of time challenged the authority of interntional giant Reynolds. I think the pens they made were great and they had good reach. The media promotion campaigns were also good. They had huge stars like Javed Akhtar and Raveena Tandon working for them. Today no one probably remembers the company and the brand. This would definately become a nice case for strategy course… I would love to see what Prof. Amit Kapoor would want to say about it.

Talking about Javed Akhtar now…
Hes got a talent with words. I don’t realy know what all lyrics he has penned down but I have a lets say brand association of Javed Akhtar with great lyrics. The advertisement that I have talked about above is a case in point here. (I learnt this new term – case in point – in one of the classes at my PGPM).

Wish I could write as well as Javed Saheb and stand upto my promise of a poem to P…
