Charlie Munger at Wesco Shareholders Meeting

Charlie Munger spoke at the Wesco Shareholders Meeting and here are a couple of gems from him …

“You shouldn’t have to try it to learn not to pee on an electrified fence.”

“Envy and Greed lead people to do almost anything that looks profitable and does not require the use of a machine gun.”

Alvida – Life in a Metro

Life in a Metro (wiki, IMDB) is about lives of people trapped in Mumbai. I will say trapped because thats how you feel when you are in Mumbai.

If you happen to live in Mumbai, and don’t feel trapped, you are living in an illusion, a matrix and sooner you wake up, better it is for you.

Coming back to Metro, although all the songs in the album are must have on any ipod, Alvida is my favorite. There are two versions, slower one by KK (my favorite singer) and a faster one by James (Bangaldeshi Singer/Composer). Even though its favorite KK vs relatively unknown James, I prefer the faster one. You want to cry with the song when you here James sing it. It pains just to listen to his voice. You can relate to pain and suffering.

KK proves yet again why is he the maestro of high pitched songs. I have heard him sing live and hes a magician. And as a person, he is as charming and down to Earth as anyone can be. Got lucky when I spent some time with him at my college fest in 2006.

Full Lyrics

Chupke se kahin, dheeme paaun se
jaane kis tarah, kis ghadi
aage badh gaye, humse raahon mein
par tum toh abhi thi yahin
kuch bhi na suna, kab ka tha gila
kaise keh diya alvida

Jinke darmiya gujri thi abhi
kal tak yeh meri zindagi
dono baahon ko, thandi chaanv ko
hum bhi kar chale alvida

Alvida, alvida, meri raahein alvida
meri saansein kehati hai, alvida
alvida, alvida, ab kehna aur kya
jab tune keh diya, alvida

Sunle bekhabar, yuun aankhein pher kar aaj tu chali jaa
dhundegi nazar humko hi magar har jagah
aisi raaton mein leke karvate, yaad hamein karna
aur phir haar kar kehna kyun magar, keh diya alvida alvida
koi puchhe toh zara, kya socha aur kaha alvida
alvida, alvida, ab kehna aur kya
jab tune keh diya, alvida

Hum the dil jale, phir bhi dil kahe
kaash mere sang aaj hote tum agar, hoti har dagar gulsitaa
tumse hai khafa, hum naaraaz hai, dil hai pareshaan
socha na suna tune kyun bhala keh diya alvida alvida
koi puchhe toh zara, kya socha aur kaha alvida
alvida, alvida, ab kehna aur kya
jab tune keh diya, alvida

kyun socha aur kahan alvida

dono baahon ko, thandi chaanv ko
hum bhi kar chale alvida

What makes Indians, Indians?

After all that has been said and haerd about India at 60, Independence, Soceity, I was wondering what makes an Indian Indian?

Few intereting characterstics of us Indians are

– We like to read from borrowed someone else’s newspaper.

– In a crowded bus we want other passengers to make room.

– We will hang clothes on top of each other on one single nail,.

– We will bargain for 1 rupee for grocery but happily pay extra in shopping malls.

Please note that I am not trying to hurl abuses or mock Indians but its an honest attempt to figure out who we are and what makes us Indians.

I need more additions to the list. If someone can give me some inputs, I shall keep on adding to this list.

Happy birthday Shahrukh Khan

SRK is one person I have started to idolize recently. If I was asked a reason for this sudden spring in admiration, I would not have any answers. Its just that he is one of those people who have achieved whatever they set out to do.

A friend told me about his life and times right from the time he was a schoolboy in Delhi. He has excelled at anything and everything he has put his hands into. Then in one of the interviews he has said he always wanted to conquer the world one day and hasn’t he realized it already (he has turned 42).

There are more things that I would like to write but as always I aint got no time to spare.

And yeah if anyone is actually reading this, please understand that my preferences in life have not changed. Men can also like (read admire) other men.

Aashaayen – Iqbal

Nagesh Kukunoor is one of the few people I like in Bollywood. Rockford still remains my favorite movie, I can watch it umpteen number of times. One of his other movies is Iqbal and there is a track by KK called Aashaayen …

Singer: KK + others
Lyrics:

aashaayen …
aashaayen …
kutch paane ki ho aas aas
kutch armaan ho jo khaas khaas
aashaayen …
har koshish mein ho waar waar
kare dariyao ko aar paar
aashaayen …
toofano ko chir ke
manzilo ko chin le
(aashaayen khile dil ki
ummeedein hase dil ki
ab mushkil nahi kutch bhi
nahi kutch bhi) – 2

o ho o…

udd jaaye leke khushi
apne sang tujhko waha
jannat se mulakat ho
puri ho teri har dua
(aashaayen khile dil ki
ummeedein hase dil ki
ab mushkil nahi kutch bhi
nahi kutch bhi) – 2

aashaayen …
gujre aaisi har raat raat
ho khwaahisho se baat baat
aashaayen …
lekar suraj se aag aag
gaaye ja apne raag raag
aashaayen …
kutch aaisa karke dikha
khud khush ho jaaye khuda

(aashaayen khile dil ki
ummeedein hase dil ki
ab mushkil nahi kutch bhi
nahi kutch bhi) – 2

o ho o…

teri woh raftaar ho
roke se bhi tu na ruke
haasil kar aaisa shikhar
parbat ki bhi nazrein uthe

(aashaayen khile dil ki
ummeedein hase dil ki
ab mushkil nahi kutch bhi
nahi kutch bhi) – 2
aashaayen – 3

Jaane Kya Dhoondta Hai Yeh Mera Dil

Jaane Kya Dhoondta Hai Yeh Mera Dil …

When Lucky Ali (Wikipedia, ClickLucky) came up with this song, he probably could not guess he was talking about me, my life and my aspirations.

This post is about a couple of years late. I should have been writing this when I the song first came out. But no, I couldn’t have possibly written this then. I did not even know myself then. I don’t know myself even today but I have made a start and lets see how the search goes and where does it takes me. All I can say right now is STAY TUNED :D.

Title: Jaane Kya Dhoondta Hai
Singer: Lucky Ali
Lyrics: Nida Fazli
Music: M M Kreem
Movie: Sur
Listen Online: Raaga.com

Jaane kya dhoondta hai, yeh mera dil,
Tujhko kya chaahiye zindagi,
Raaste hi raaste hain, kaisa hai yeh safar,
Dhoondti hain jisko nazrein, jaane hai voh kidhar,
Jaane kya dhoondta hai, ae mera dil,
Tujhko kya chaahiye zindagi,

Bechehra sa koi sapna hai voh,
Kahin nahin hai phir bhi apna hai voh,
Aise mere andar shaamil hai voh,
Main hoon behta dariya, saahil ai voh,
Hai kahan voh, voh kidhar hai, raaste kuch to bata,
Kaun sa uska nagar hai, rehguzar kuch to bata,
Dhoondti hain jisko nazrein, jaane hai voh kidhar,
Jaane kya dhoondta hai, ae mera dil,
Tujhko kya chaahiye zindagi…

Soona sa hai mandir, moorat nahin,
Khaali hai aaina, soorat nahin,
Jeene ka jeevan mein kaaran to ho,
Maheke kaise kaliyaan, gulshan to ho,
Shamma hai jo mujh mein roshan, voh viraasat kisko doon,
Door tak koi nahin hai, apni chaahat kisko doon,
Dhoondti hain jisko nazrein, jaane hai voh kidhar,
Jaane kya dhoondta hai, ae mera dil,
Tujhko kya chaahiye zindagi…

This appeared in Times of India

Jonathan Ive – My Hero !

After quite some time now I have had an oppurtunity to call someone My Hero! Jonathan Ive is the Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple. Yes the company that can boast of names such as Steve Wozniak, Guy Kawasaki and Steve Jobs. I am sure there are more names to the list but I have heard of only these three people.

So what’s so great about this Ive guy? To start with he is credited with the mind behind the designs like G4, G5, iPod, iMac. I mean wow. I always thought that these were cool looking boys toys and the company has put in a lot of money and mind and time to design these. I never thought that all the designs could have come from the team led by one person, one mind, Jonathan Ive.

So what do I know about Jonathan now? He is Sr.VP at Apple. He is said to be one of the key people in the entire history of Apple. His design on iMac in 1998 saved the company from ruts.

Most importanly, I firmly believe that design is as powerful medium of expression as is speech/words. Simplicity makes a lot of sense …

Star News reports on Dhoni !

Ok so continuing in the series of TV bashing; here is yet another one…

Rupurt Mudroch’s Star News was the first to report that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s wicket keeper has clipped his hair.

I mean move over Mr. Bush, leave the bird flu aside and no information about good old politics. Headline today on Star News is Dhoni and his clipped hair.

That was not all. Star news actually went ahead and interviewed the barber at Taj who clipped the hair, compared the earlier look when he had long hair with the new look. They infact got a hair specialist to comment on the hair style.

They did their bit of background research also. They went to Ranchi, Dhoni’s hometown and talked to his friends. They found out that Dhoni had long hair since last three years and he always took great care of his hair. They also dug out a picture when he was just one year old. They talked to his mother about his hair.

I agree to the fact Dhoni is on of the best wicket keepers to have served India but I think Star News should realize that they are a news channel with some kind of responsibility attached. They should move beyond these tabloid kind of news lippings just to get a higher TRP rating. And if this was not for higher TRP, I think something is serisouly wrong with Star News.

I thought media industry is growing leaps and bounds in India. I guess I was wrong. If someone out there remotely related to Star is reading this, please do something about a news channel that can make headlines of a the personal life of a cricketer.
